Saturday, May 8th, is the “Battle for the Empire” R/C Combat event at the Corona R/C Club field.

R/C combat is an exciting fast paced competitive sport.  The sky is filled with fast moving planes in swirling dogfights and high speed pursuits.  Cut streamers fill the air and the ace’s planes are draped with opponent’s streamers as they hunt down their next target.  If’ you’ve never seen combat before, you owe it to yourself to check this out, it’s the most fun you can have with a radio in your hands!

The action starts at 9 AM.

Thought I'd post an update to a combat event George and I competed at last weekend up North in Exeter, CA.

Exeter is a nice town 30 miles North of Bakersfield with a lot of fruit orchards and dairy farms.  A lot of the dairy farms  have relocated from Chino.

The little over five hour drive up took me through places I've never heard of. California is an amazing place with wonders around every corner.

On the way up George and I took a side route through the high desert town of Lancaster, which is where I grew up and haven't been to for over 10 years, and stopped at my favorite pizza place for lunch. As we continued to make our way to Interstate 5 we went through the California Poppy Preserve and was treated to miles of golden blankets of Poppies. Growing up in the area I knew it was a rare occurrence as it takes just the right mix of rain and temperature to have such an amazing bloom.

On the 5 cresting the Grapevine were some of the most beautiful green covered rolling hills and mountains I've seen.

Going through Bakersfield getting close to Exeter are miles of orchards and oil derricks. Amazing to see how bountiful our part of California actually is.

The Exeter Thunderhawks R/C Club guys are just great. They are a small group and we enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone.

Now, Palomar has the “Jungle”, Exeter has the “Mini Jungle”. Outside of the runway are acres of 4 ˝ foot tall grass. Thick and sharp grass. When a plane does down in this stuff it is literally swallowed up and disappears!

First round of SSC, two minutes in and I'm down and out. After the round I go tramping through the grass searching for my plane. No luck, I figured it's gone.

During the lunch break I went hunting and found my plane only because I stepped on it. I never would have found it any other way.

Usually the grass is cut at this time and used for cattle feed but with all the rain it grew fast but hadn't matured for harvesting.

The event ran flawlessly, the Exeter guys did a great job keeping things moving. The atmosphere was relaxing and unrushed.

We had a nice lunch of wraps, chips and drinks. The raffle had a nice mix of items that we all use and they had plenty of them.

All-in-all I'm looking forward to the next time I get the chance to head up North.

Hi Danny,

I just noticed that you never updated the thread on the RCCA Forum. I know it's getting a little close now but it still might not be too late to put something there for those who don't use this or the Palomar forums.

Blessings, Terry

Well, we're finally here. One day to go and the weather forecast is for a really nice day. 4 rounds of SSC and 4 rounds of Open B.

We appreciate the support from those that are making a bit of a drive and the club will be ready to make it a great day for everyone.

Pilot packs for the first twenty pre-registered pilots.

The raffle has three ARF SSC combat planes. A Battle AXE, a P-40 and a MiG, along with .15 engines, a really nice flight box, fuel, starter, fuel pumps and other goodies.

Lunch is available for purchase. We have BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, and water and soda.

And to top it all off, a trip to the Chino Planes of Fame Museum is planned if we can wrap up by two o'clock.

See you all Saturday.

Troy took first place in SSC, congratulations Troy!

The Corona team had a good day flying; Jason, Bob, Gary, Mike, Troy, Dave, George and myself.  Bryan would have competed but had issues with his electric plane.

We had 21 pilots register for SSC with 11 registering for both SSC and Open B.  We had well over 100 spectators out to watch and all were well entertained.

We lost a few planes and beat up the rest, and only in Combat can you call that a good day!

Ron did a fantastic job as line marshal.  He was at it non-stop all day and didn't miss a beat.

Charlie and Ed manned registration and kept everything running smoothly.

Dusty came through again with his kitchen expertise.  Aaron and Brian lent a hand helping to prepare and serve the food--which tasted great.

Thanks to all that came out to help.  Once again the Corona R/C Club came together to put on another very successful event.
