Hi everyone,
Well, how is the New Year going for you? I hope everyone had a new airplane on their Christmas list and Santa Claus was very generous to you. I didn't ask for any myself because I have two on my bench, a P38 and a giant scale biplane I need to finish before I start another project. They have been sitting there while I work around them. I think it's time to get them done. Is anyone else building from kits or scratch? ARFs are nice but I like building a plane better.
The AMA show and Cable air show are now over.
We are sad to announce to our club members the passing of Albert "Grandpa Buzz" Steward who died of prostate cancer just before our January club meeting.
"Buzz" was a strong club supporter and was always seen together with his grandson 'Sam Converse'. Buzz supported Sam in his flying interests. You would see the both of them at club meetings, events, work parties and of course flying down at the field. There was a special bond between Buzz and Sam. In the years that I knew Buzz I remember him as always being extremely friendly and down to earth. Many times I would see Buzz sitting in his white van, sipping coffee and watching his grandson fly his helicopter or airplane. I would casually walk up, knock on the window and say "Grandpa Buzz, how's it going?" I have to say that I liked calling him "Grandpa Buzz" and I believe he took no offense to me doing so.
Buzz was not a pilot but he was definitely a "pilot's friend" in the pit area. The club extends their sympathy to Sam and his family. Those who knew Buzz will miss him.
On New Year's Eve I had a thought of going to the field and doing an article of who was going to be the first club members flying at the field on New Year's Day. The next morning I woke up at 7AM, hurriedly took a shower, got dressed, grabbed my camera and headed out the door starting my drive up I-15.
Well the three day AMA Show ordeal is over. Ordeal? Maybe I should say 'or deals', or maybe not.
First off I would like to thank fellow board members (Gary, Mark, CJ, Brent) and club members (Ron Hurwit, Dusty Shearer, Brett Scott, John Kupinski, Mike Dimick) who came and helped at our booth. A special thank you goes to Brent's guests Stephanie and Emma (Emma helped with tickets and drew the raffle winners!). And of course a thank you to our club members who purchased raffle tickets that helped raise money for our club. If you didn't know it already every dollar help$, but honestly more dollar$ help even more! Your raffle donations count so keep them coming and support our club.
The Cable Air Show this year was definitely one to remember. On Saturday, we had a good sized turnout with a good variety of airplanes as well as pilots. Our first show on Saturday started 10 minutes earlier than we had planned. Everyone scrambled into the air, and put on a great show with the time we had. Unfortunately, a full scale aircraft's radio problems cut our time short and some of our pilots couldn't fly, so were only able to show the crowd a portion of what we have to offer. When we got back to the booth, the flight orders were rearranged so that the pilots who could not fly in the morning would be the first to fly that afternoon. We used the time between shows to relax, enjoy the show, and promote the hobby.
It took a little longer than was expected, but after a couple of delays, our club website has been relaunched with a whole new design. This new version will work towards showcasing our club accomplishments and add a whole new layer of membership services.
Before I go any farther, I would like to thank Jason Benson for his years of administrating the website. After being the webmaster for so many years, I'm sure Jason was happy to hand over the reins to someone else. Being the only person in charge of managing a whole website like ours couldn't have been easy for him.
